Selkie has taken an intriguing approach with its latest collection, titled “The Ghost Ship,” launched during New York Fashion Week. Unlike many designers showcasing their Spring 2027 collections, Selkie remains committed to its runway-to-retail model, ensuring that the Fall 2026 pieces are available for purchase immediately.

The show itself presented a vivid tableau of a traveling pirate circus, featuring “warrior girls” navigating life in a post-apocalyptic context. According to Gordon, this theme allows for a deeper exploration of resilience and creativity in an imagined world plagued by uncertainty. The performers engage in acts of joy as a means of survival, weaving both humor and artistry into their narratives—a visually stunning display that also included an extraordinarily flexible artist who kicked off and concluded the performance.

Gordon's designs draw richly from an array of influences, marrying maritime folklore with historical motifs and circus imagery. Expect to see pirate and harlequin patterns mingled with elements of armor, corsets, flowing romantic dresses, and theatrical cuts. A darker twist persists through the employment of chainmail, religious artifacts, seashells, and oversized accessories, heightening the fantastical aesthetic that Selkie cultivates.

The inspiration behind this collection is deeply personal for Gordon, rooted in Cheryl Strayed's essay “The Ghost Ship That Didn’t Carry Us,” featured in her acclaimed compilation "Tiny Beautiful Things." “It’s about choice in the end. It’s about not regretting anything that you’ve chosen in your life,” Gordon elaborated post-show. She reflected on the dual nature of choice, mentioning moments in her life where public opinion on her decisions often felt like navigating a circus of judgments.

“Why not put on the ultimate clown show then and embrace the fool?” she mused, highlighting a playful recklessness that pervades her current outlook. Gordon intentionally chose an apocalyptic theme, reflecting contemporary anxieties surrounding the end of the world. “There’s a lot of discussion about the world ending, and while many are consumed by fear, I don’t subscribe to that,” she stated.

Influence from Emily St. John Mandel’s novel and subsequent adaptation “Station Eleven,” which portrays artists seeking to maintain their craft amidst societal collapse, served as a key element of her narrative. “Even in an apocalypse, creativity and love persist as vital foundations. Art becomes a form of service in the face of chaos,” she explained.

In her closing remarks, Gordon emphasized the inherent performative nature of existence: “All life’s a stage, but what does it mean to perform?” This line encapsulates the essence of the collection—a conscious exploration of identity through the prism of performance.

As the collection unfolds, viewers can experience Selkie's vision of this unique aesthetic. Each look builds upon the narrative of survival and artistry amidst dire circumstances.
