CFDA CEO Steven Kolb’s Controversial Response to PETA Protest at NYFW

The recent COS Fall 2026 runway show at New York Fashion Week became a focal point of controversy when Steven Kolb, the CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), confronted PETA activists protesting against the use of wool. As the show unfolded at the WSA venue in lower Manhattan, several PETA members breached the catwalk, brandishing signs with provocative messages like, “Sheep beaten and bloodied for wool. Don’t buy it.” While most of the activists were promptly escorted out by security, Kolb's actions drew significant attention.

Interestingly, PETA had preemptively announced intentions to confront H&M over its wool sourcing practices prior to the fashion week events. The organization criticized H&M's claims regarding “responsible wool,” referring to shocking footage from a PETA Asia investigation that allegedly documented mistreatment of sheep within H&M’s supply chain.

PETA issued a statement condemning Kolb’s actions, asserting that violence was not an appropriate response to their protest, which aimed to raise awareness about animal rights. They announced their intention to file a police report against him, describing the confrontation as an assault on members of their organization.

The situation escalated further when PETA’s New York senior director of media relations, Moira Colley, announced a planned meeting between PETA and Kolb to discuss the incident and the issues surrounding wool sourcing. Colley noted that the group had reconsidered pursuing criminal charges following legal consultations.

In the wake of this incident, Kolb took to Instagram, expressing regret over his reaction and stating he will take a voluntary leave to reflect on the situation. He admitted that his behavior was inappropriate and emphasized the need for such matters to be managed by security personnel instead.
