Rachel Scott's Vision Comes to Life in Proenza Schouler's Spring 2027 Collection

Rachel Scott marked a significant moment in her journey as the creative director of Proenza Schouler, unveiling her Spring 2027 collection at the very site where the brand first found its retail home: the former Barneys women’s store. This location is symbolic; it was here that the brand commenced its journey under the guidance of co-founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, both recent graduates from Parsons.

In her second runway show since stepping into this pivotal role, Scott drew inspiration from the diverse and vibrant women of New York City who embrace their individuality in fashion. “I see women in the middle of the day with a gown on and it’s totally normal and admissible. And I find that really inspiring,” she expressed in an interview backstage. Models within the collection navigated the venue's spiral staircase, echoing the brand's early customer experiences around 2002.

Several standout pieces during the show resonated strongly with Proenza Schouler's signature style, particularly highlighted by the introduction of the new PS1 Walker. This handbag design is a thoughtful revamp of the iconic style, conceived through a collaboration with Reed Krakoff. Yet, the collection as a whole undeniably bears Scott's distinct artistic stamp.

Her strongest performance to date, the collection artfully reflects her passion for exquisite materials and an admiration for craftsmanship. One notable feature includes a tiger motif which at a glance appears to be just a print; however, it showcases intricate layering techniques. “It’s actually silk in two colors that’s sewn together in an intarsia pattern of the tiger, and then it’s placed, and then it’s bonded, and then it’s made into the garment,” Scott explained. “Handmade for me is the ultimate luxury. Everything goes through multiple layers of hand and craft as well as precise technology in garment making.”

Since taking the creative helm, Scott has expressed a commitment to honoring the brand’s rich heritage while simultaneously forging her own path. Her thoughtful approach focused on capturing the essence and identifying the core elements that define Proenza Schouler has evidently resonated well with audiences. In a recent backstage interview, she mentioned her transition from simply understanding the brand's identity to confidently integrating her vision into the collections seen on store racks.

During a brief moment of downtime filled with excitement, Scott found herself in Proenza Schouler’s SoHo boutique, where she witnessed firsthand customer reactions to her collection. Observing two distinct groups, one captivated by the blue-and-orange Donegal knit tailoring from Fall 2026 and the other drawn to eye-catching printed dresses embellished with fringe and grommets, she felt a renewed sense of comfort in her role. “That made me really excited that those were the things they were drawn to. It makes me feel a little more at ease,” she said, reflecting on the gravity of her responsibilities in continuing a legacy while carving out her own design identity.
