Luar's Spring 2027 Show: Navigating Two Christophers in Fashion

For a fashion label to manage to draw an audience to Queens, particularly to Corona — a good hour from Manhattan — is no small feat, and yet Luar successfully gathered over 200 attendees for its Spring 2027 show.

The event took place at the Queens Museum, situated in a large park that featured the iconic Unisphere, a massive globe weighing 350 tons and measuring 120 feet in diameter. This choice of venue was intentional, reflecting the dual inspirations behind designer Raul Lopez's latest collection, which intertwines elements of Christopher Street and the complex narrative of Christopher Columbus.

Show notes emphasized this unique juxtaposition: “This collection moves between two Christophers,” they stated. “One is Christopher Street, where I found myself in New York — a place of collision marked by nightlife, isolation, and the survival of the queer narrative. The other is Christopher Columbus, represented not through myth, but as a fracture; his voyages involved a global act of claiming and renaming through imposed narratives.” This collection seeks to explore the opposing legacies of the street culture and imperial history.

After a delay of over an hour past the scheduled start, the first models presented the collection, starting with pieces characterized by neutral-toned tailoring alongside touches from the 15th and 16th centuries, including bloomers, ruffles, and feathery accents. As the show progressed, the designs transitioned to brighter hues, striking prints, and more avant-garde silhouettes.

The designer posed intriguing questions in the show notes: “What happens when early-modern garments meet early-2000s New York streetwear? What occurs when identity pushes against assigned borders?” However, the alignment of these concepts felt somewhat obscured in the presentation. Lopez did not provide further clarity during the show, declining an interview opportunity afterward, which left a gap in understanding the deeper intent behind the collection.

Despite the aesthetically pleasing craftsmanship — from striking gowns to intricate designs — the communications around the collection left much to be desired. There appears to be a tension in trying to convey a narrative of identity that grapples with colonial history versus personal expression. The thematic reach suggests both a rejection of singularity and an adaptation to multifaceted identities, yet the message seems muddled. Is Lopez advocating for a break from entrenched codes, or are we merely adapting to them?

As a whole, while Luar's Spring 2027 collection showcases exceptional skills in garment construction and artistry, the underlying messaging, whether on colonialism, identity, or fashion codes, could benefit from further refinement to resonate with its intended audience.
