Altuzarra's Spring 2027 Collection Explores the Fusion of Masculinity and Femininity

Altuzarra's Spring 2027 collection, showcased at the historic Woolworth Building in Manhattan, marked a significant departure into a more fluid interpretation of gender through fashion. Guests were greeted with a copy of “Casa Susanna: The Story of the First Trans Network in the United States, 1959–1968,” which highlights a Catskills retreat where individuals could express their true selves, a theme that deeply influenced the collection.

Designer Joseph Altuzarra reflected on the inspiration drawn from the images of Casa Susanna, describing it as a representation of joy and the authenticity of summer days spent as a child. This sense of freedom characterized the collection's designs, intertwining elements of both masculinity and femininity. "There was a central tension that was really about a traditional masculine 1960s working man’s wardrobe," he noted, juxtaposed with the overt glamour of feminine styles.

This tension manifested in several striking combinations: shirts traditionally associated with menswear were unbuttoned to reveal bra tops, while Harrington jackets evoked a certain rugged masculinity alongside voluminous skirts. Loose belts, unfinished seams, and cardigans worn carelessly contributed to a sense of “undoneness,” a term Altuzarra used to describe the collection's playful approach to structure.

Altuzarra acknowledged a shift in his design approach this season, one that both revisited and revitalized past silhouettes. By incorporating recurring themes from earlier collections, he explored new textures and layering techniques, resulting in looks that felt both liberated and authentic. "Having more texture, more layering," he specified, emphasized the aim of achieving a more expressive narrative through clothing.

The collection's stylistic versatility strayed from the rigid structures often seen in previous seasons, presenting pieces that felt dynamically alive and adaptable. This refreshing take aligns with the overarching spirit of Casa Susanna, embodying the essence of genuine self-expression and exploration in fashion.
