Anna Sitar's Inspiring IRONMAN Journey: Conquering Doubts and Challenges

Anna Sitar's Ironman Journey: From Doubt to Triumph

Before she even stepped foot at the starting line of her first full IRONMAN, Anna Sitar faced a crisis of confidence. Just three months prior to the IRONMAN Copenhagen, she tackled a 70.3 race—an event meant to assess her readiness for the full challenge. The outcome? A bit of a wake-up call. "It kicked my butt," Sitar admitted, sparking doubts about her ability to handle the full Ironman distance. For two weeks, she took a step back from her training, grappling with whether to abandon the Copenhagen race altogether. The situation only worsened when, just days before the event, she injured her foot after accidentally kicking a rock, leading to the painful loss of a toenail. If you think that might deter her, you'd be mistaken. Despite these setbacks, Sitar forged ahead, enduring a grueling schedule that included a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a marathon, all under 13 hours. "When you're at that fork in the road, you can either not try and always know the answer or take the chance and maybe be surprised by what you're capable of," Sitar reflected, clearly grateful for her decision to compete.

A Reassurance Amidst Setbacks

Despite previous experience in marathons, the full Ironman represented a different beast for Sitar. The aftermath of her 70.3 race left her questioning everything. "I left that race mortified about doing a full," she reflected, haunted by thoughts of whether she could endure the pain of a full Ironman. During the two weeks of mental struggle and self-doubt, she ultimately realized there was no way to determine her limits besides actually attempting the race. Sitar's shift in focus was revealing. No longer preoccupied with speed, she determined her mission: survive the race. "It was about getting to the end," the influencer noted, illustrating her resolve to just complete the journey.

Dealing with Roadblocks

Sitar's lead-up to the IRONMAN was fraught with mishaps, including her toenail loss. "I had to get shots in my foot and have it removed. It was not a fun experience," she recounted, recognizing that this incident occurred during a crucial training period. Surprisingly, as the pressure eased, it altered her mindset entirely. With major training missed, she felt relieved from the punishing expectations she had set for herself. When race day arrived, nothing could prepare her for the kaleidoscope of events that would unfold. During the swim portion, she encountered seaweed at eye level and took it all in stride, reminding herself, "Don't panic—you have the whole day ahead of you.” Breaking the race into manageable portions helped her mentally tackle the grueling distances; she kept reminding herself of previous distances she had tackled before.

A Day Full of Surprises

Unexpected events didn't stop on her bike and swim. Sitar also faced a surprising moment when she tipped over upon dismounting her bike in front of spectators. Later, amidst the marathon, she experienced another setback—vomiting during the run. Yet, none of it diminished her spirit. "Things went wrong, and I still called it the best day ever,” she emphasized, describing how enjoyable it was to soak in the atmosphere around her. This time around, she opted to enjoy the experience instead of getting lost in self-doubt, learning from previous marathons where she missed monumental moments like the Big Ben while fixated on her own struggles. "I smiled for about 90 percent of the time," Sitar said, capturing the brilliance of the colorful Copenhagen route, which, as she described, was filled with cheering spectators and vibrant scenery.

A Family Affair with a Future

Family played a pivotal role in her journey. Sitar's fiancé, Josh "Bru" Brubaker, and her father tracked her progress on electric bikes throughout the race. Their support fortified her resolve, even if it meant a humorous moment where she outpaced them on her standard bike, much to her delight. “That’s my biggest flex!” she chuckled. Crossing the finish line and seeing her parents' tears of pride made the event even more emotional. Sitar expressed a desire to expand these shared experiences, hoping to create new family traditions around endurance events in the future.

Thinking Ahead: More Challenges Await

Rather than being deterred by the formidable full Ironman, Sitar is already contemplating future races, including another 70.3. She views it not just as a path to conquer past insecurities, but as an affirmation of her resilience. With her first Ironman complete—marked by lost toenails, unplanned falls, and even moments of illness—Sitar emerged victorious, declaring it unequivocally as "the best day ever." For her, the journey has transformed from doubt to hope, combining the thrill of competition with a renewed appreciation for every moment on and off the course.
